South Africa has handed first One-day International (ODI) call-ups to three players, expanding their limited overs depth. Laban Peter, Leland Melanesian , and Jason Smith were named in the squad for the upcoming Afghanistan series in Sharjah, starting Sept. 18. This move by head coach Rob Walter aims to build a stronger pool of players as South Africa prepares for major tournaments, including the 50-over World Cup in 2027. Simelane, an all-rounder, and Peter, a spin bowler, have impressed in recent T20 performances, while Smith, an experienced all-rounder, gets another opportunity in the OI format.
South Africa’s strategy is focused on offering more chances to fringe players who have shown potential in recent weeks and months. This effort to build a broader squad follows the team’s recent performances, including a 3-0 T20 series defeat against the West Indies. With key players like Luigi Gilding sidelined due to a right calf injury, the team is preparing for their upcoming series against Afghanistan and Ireland in Abu Dhabi at the Sheikh Payed Cricket Stadium.
