Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has introduced a new winter gas supply schedule to manage the increased demand for heating and cooking in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P). Starting in November 2024, the updated schedule is designed to optimize gas distribution during peak hours, ensuring stability in the system. Full-pressure time slots have been designated for 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM, 12:00 PM to 2:00 PM, and 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM daily, providing consumers with gas access when needed.
SNGPL representatives confirmed that the new plan aligns with government directives to maintain reliable service for households, particularly as colder months lead to increased gas consumption for heating and hot water. The revised schedule aims to alleviate pressure on the gas supply system during high-demand periods, ensuring a more consistent and predictable supply.
This winter schedule is expected to help mitigate challenges for SNGPL’s 7.22 million customers across Punjab and K-P. As colder weather increases gas demand, these adjustments are designed to better support households during peak usage hours, reducing strain on the system. Additionally, according to Petroleum Information Services, Express News reports a 2% rise in daily oil and gas production and sales of petroleum products during this fiscal year. For example, crude production averaged 65,582 barrels per Day during the week ending October 31.
Impact on Gas Supply and Exports
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s petroleum exports to France, Germany, and Western Europe grew by 16.23%, reaching $1.165 billion in the first quarter. According to the State Bank, imports also rose by 40.67%, totaling $496.34 million. Furthermore, data from the Cotton Ginners Association shows a 37% decrease in cotton bales from ginning factories, with a total of 4.29 million bales, compared to 6.79 million bales in the previous season.
Gas Pressure Issues in Lahore Amid Winter Cold
Gas pressure has notably decreased in Lahore as winter temperatures fall, causing significant disruptions for domestic users in areas like Garhi Shahu, Davis Road, Inner City, Muslim Town, Garden Town, Green Town, and Journalist Colony. Residents face hardships, particularly during meals, due to low gas pressure. According to Aamir Tufail, Managing Director of Sui Northern Gas Company, gas demand typically triples during the winter, making it difficult to maintain sufficient supply.
In response, some households have turned to alternative energy sources, such as LPG and firewood, for cooking and heating. Despite efforts to boost supply during peak hours, many consumers need help. Sui Northern Gas Company is actively monitoring the situation and working to balance supply and demand to ease the strain on affected communities.
